Why does your board feel twitchy the moment you're standing on it? You made the mount, you have speed, and yet the whole ride is a series of small emergencies — a lurch left, a catch, a lurch right, arms windmilling for the wave.

Here's the reframe: the board isn't twitchy. The board is honest. What you're feeling is your own balance corrections, amplified.

Wobble is firefighting in the knees

When your stance isn't yet grooved, your body keeps balance reactively — it waits for a tilt, then fires a correction. Each correction is a little too big (reactions always are), which creates a tilt the other way, which triggers another correction. That oscillation is the wobble. It's not the water; it's a feedback loop running in your own legs.

A grooved stance works differently. The crouch sits low and quiet, knees bent, weight centered over the board, and small disturbances get absorbed before they ever become tilts. Nothing to correct, so nothing oscillates. Watch an experienced rider glide and the striking thing is how little happens — that stillness is the skill.

The depth of your crouch matters less than its consistency. A rider who stays at one steady flex the whole glide is stable; a rider whose knees pump and straighten and re-bend is fighting for balance rep after rep. The drill — Balance-Board Sets

Get on a balance board (an Indo-style roller board is ideal) and do Balance-Board Sets: ride it for 30–45 seconds, rest for 15–30, and repeat for 3 sets. Do that 3x/week — living room, garage, anywhere.

Set your feet where they'd sit on your skimboard, drop into your glide crouch, and make the goal quiet, not survival. At first you'll oscillate exactly like you do on water — that's the same feedback loop showing itself. Within a few sessions, the corrections shrink from your arms into your ankles, and the board goes still under you.

Once you can hold 45 seconds calmly, add slow squats during the ride — down over four counts, up over four — while keeping the board level. That's the exact strength-plus-stillness the glide demands, because on the water your crouch has to stay steady while everything underneath you moves.

A week of honest sets and your next session will feel like someone swapped your board for a wider one. They didn't. They swapped your knees for quieter ones.
