Watch a strong skimboarder at a new beach and you'll notice something odd. They don't ride for the first ten minutes. They stand there, board under arm, watching water slide up and down the sand. Then their first wave of the day looks like their fiftieth.
That's not patience for its own sake. They're reading. And the read is a learnable skill with real parts — here they are.
The two-wave pattern
Shore-break comes in pairs more often than you'd think. Wave one runs up the beach and retreats, leaving behind the thin, glassy film of water you skim on. Wave two arrives while that film is still live — and wave two is the one you ride.
So your first question at any beach isn't "which wave looks fun?" It's "which wave lays the film, and which one follows it?" Once you see the pairing, the whole beach becomes legible: the film tells you where to drop, and the follower tells you when.
The two go-windows
The water on the sand is never still — it's surging in or drawing out, and both directions offer you a ride if you time them.
Go-window one: the surge is rushing IN. Drop onto that incoming film and it's a moving walkway — the water under your board is already traveling toward the beach's edge, and you get a free speed boost on top of your sprint.
Go-window two: the surge is drawing OUT. Drop on the wet sand it leaves behind and the outflow pulls you seaward, ferrying you toward the incoming wave. Less top-end speed than window one, but the water is actively delivering you to the meeting point.
Austin Keen's heuristic compresses all of this into one line: the shoreline surge's motion should match up with the incoming wave. When the water at your feet and the wave out the back are moving in a way that connects them, go. When they're out of sync, stand still and wait for the next pairing.
Dead water — the spot that eats rides
Between the go-windows lives dead water: still, deep, momentum-hungry. It's the pocket where the surge has stalled — not rushing in, not drawing out, just sitting there. Drop into it and your board sinks a half-inch, drag multiplies, and the speed you sprinted for drains away in two board-lengths.
Dead water is why two drops that look identical from the dunes end so differently. Same run, same wave, but one rider hit live film and one hit the stalled pocket. Learning to see the difference — sheen and motion versus dull stillness — is worth more than any gear upgrade you'll ever make.
One honest note on venue: this all comes easiest on a gently sloped beach with small waves. Steep dry-sand shore-break compresses every window and punishes every read. Learn where the water is forgiving.
Train the read like a skill
Because it is one. The drill is the Wave-Count Drill: before every session, sit for 10 minutes and watch. Call the pattern out loud — "film-layer... rider... film-layer... rider" — and call the surge too: "rushing in... drawing out... dead." Out-loud predictions get checked; silent ones get forgotten. Do the full 10 minutes every session, even once you're good, because every day's ocean deals a slightly different hand.
