How fast should you run before the drop? The honest answer is the one almost nobody gives: fast enough to plane and reach the wave you picked — delivered to the right spot at the right moment. Not "as fast as you possibly can." Riders who chase maximum sprint speed usually arrive at the wave out of control, or arrive at water that was never going to give them a ride.
Speed is the only fuel you get
A surfer paddles into a wave and the wave supplies the energy. A skimboarder works in the opposite direction: you start from the sand and travel out to the wave, and until you physically reach it, the wave contributes nothing. Every foot of that glide is paid for by the speed you carried off the sand.
Speed also decides whether you plane at all. A skimboard stays on top of the water the way a skipped stone does — above a threshold it skims, below it it plows. Run too slow and you're not just arriving short; you're sinking en route.
So the run matters enormously. What's misleading is treating it as a raw sprint contest.
The number that actually matters is relative speed
Your board doesn't care how fast you're moving across the sand. It cares how fast it's moving through the water it's on.
Run out over a surge that's still rushing shoreward at 5 mph while you run out at 10, and your board feels 15 mph of flow — it planes, it flies. Run the exact same 10 mph over water that's draining back out at 5, and your board feels 5. Same legs, same effort, one-third the glide.
This is why identical runs produce wildly different rides, and why "I need to get faster" is so often the wrong diagnosis. The water you launch onto is doing half the work — or undoing it.
The practical version: you run out on the water the last wave left behind, and you ride the next one. Learning to see that thin, fast-draining sheet — and to launch when it's still moving your way — buys you more glide than months of sprint training.
Where speed actually leaks
When a ride dies short, the fuel was usually there and leaked somewhere between the sand and the wave:
- A thrown board — the board lands ahead of you and decelerates before your feet arrive.
- A slow or stepped mount — every extra step on the way up is glide spent standing still.
- A tall glide — standing upright drags; staying compressed keeps the board driving.
- Chasing a nose-stab — reaching for the board's nose kills your run before you're on it.
Fix the biggest leak before adding more fuel. Sending a rider who already sprinted back to sprint harder is the most common bad advice in the sport.
Train the run — but train delivery, not just top speed
Speed is trainable, and worth training. The Beach Sprint + Ladder drill: twice a week, 5–6 sprints of 20–30 meters with full rest between reps, so every rep is genuinely fast (this is speed work, not conditioning — tired sprinting teaches slow patterns).
Two things that make those sprints count:
1. Finish some reps with the real thing. Run → drop → mount. Delivering speed to a precise point is the actual skill; raw sprint speed on an empty beach is only the raw material.
2. Stay tall and relaxed, not frantic. If adding speed wrecks your drop, back off half a gear, clean the mechanics, then climb again.
Firm wet sand is where you should do your fastest reps. Soft dry sand overloads the push-off and is useful, but keep it to a separate day — and be careful with repeated max-effort reps across a sloped beach, which is far harder on ankles and hamstrings than flat ground.

CoachVision measures your approach speed from a side-on clip in torso-lengths per second — a relative figure, not miles per hour. It's genuinely useful for spotting whether you arrived with fuel or arrived flat.
What it is not is a stopwatch: because it's measured from the footage, moving or panning the camera changes the number. So compare it within a clip, not between clips filmed differently — and if you want a true speed benchmark, time yourself over a marked 20 meters with the phone locked down.
And higher isn't automatically better. There's a window where the run is fast enough to plane and still controlled enough to drop cleanly. Overrunning it costs you the mount, and a blown mount costs more glide than the extra speed ever bought.
