What the coach measures

Run speed (relative)

How much speed you carry into the drop, measured in torso-lengths per second from the footage - not miles per hour, and not comparable between clips filmed differently (panning the camera changes it). Faster is not automatically better: overrunning the ideal window scores low, because the skill is delivering speed to the right spot, not maximum sprint.

Run build-up

Whether your run builds smoothly to full speed at the drop, or stutters and hesitates. A clean accelerating run means you committed early.

Steps to mount

Steps between releasing the board and being on it. The one-step drop keeps your speed - every extra step bleeds it into the sand.

Mount speed

Back foot to front foot in one quick motion. A slow, hesitant mount is where most speed dies.

Stance width

Feet around shoulder width on the board - wide enough to be stable, close enough to stay mobile for the wrap.

Knee bend

A low, athletic crouch on the glide. Straight legs get bucked by every ripple; bent knees absorb them.

Your ride, measured across

Skim's reference windows were set from the founder's own rides — no second rider has moved a number yet, and no pro footage was ever used. Until riders of known level have set them, this sport shows your measurements against those windows and no 0–100.

Ride out is scored only when the recording keeps rolling until the rider steps off — a clip that cuts before the ride settles leaves it blank, not guessed.

A category the clip can't show clearly comes back blank rather than guessed — and if too much of the movement is unreadable, we hold the overall score back instead of averaging what is left.

🏅 Thin-Water Flatland Runs

On a thin sheet of water with no waves, do run-drop-mount reps at full speed. All the mechanics, none of the wave pressure.

🏅 One-Step Drop Reps

Walk, drop the board, and step on in ONE stride. Start at walking pace and only add speed when it's automatic.

🏅 Flat-Drop Practice

Stand still and practice dropping the board perfectly flat - no nose-stab, no bounce. The board should kiss the water.

🏅 Running-Land Drill

Board static on wet sand: jog up and land both feet in position - back foot on the tail, front foot over the middle. Look at your feet after each rep.

How to film it

  • Film LANDSCAPE, side-on to the run, standing close to the water's edge. Get near enough that you could tell which of the rider's feet is forward just by looking at your own screen - that's about a fifth of the frame, head to feet.
  • Distance is the single biggest thing you control. Under roughly a twelfth of the frame we usually can't use the clip at all - we'll still try if our auto-zoom can lock onto the rider, but the readings come back soft and we say so. It's the most common reason a skim clip comes back thin.
  • Fix the phone somewhere and let the rider cross the frame. Speed and travel need a background that holds still, so panning to follow the rider costs the run-up and the ride-out. The glide and the wrap still read from a panned clip.
  • We score the RIDER, so keep the wave zone just inside the edge of the frame rather than filming the whole beach.
  • Start recording a few steps before the run and keep rolling until the rider has stepped off. If the clip cuts while they're still riding, the ride-out goes unscored.
  • 60fps if your phone offers it.
