A lifter films their squat, sees their torso inclined at the bottom, and panics — because somewhere they absorbed the idea that a good squat stays vertical. Meanwhile, across the internet, a coach is being asked why elite low-bar squatters lean over like they're reading the floor. Both confusions have the same answer: there is no single correct torso angle in the squat. There's a correct angle for what you're holding.
Load sets the lean
The torso's job at the bottom of a squat is to keep the load balanced over mid-foot. Where the load sits on your body decides what angle accomplishes that:
- Front squat and goblet: the load sits in front of your shoulders or at your chest, already forward of your spine. The torso stays nearly upright — a lean under 15 degrees from vertical is textbook here — because any significant tip would dump the load forward.
- High-bar back squat: bar on the traps, moderate lean. Call it the middle of the family.
- Low-bar back squat: bar carried lower on the rear delts, and the torso must incline substantially — 40 degrees and beyond is legitimate — to keep that lower bar over mid-foot. The pronounced lean isn't a compromise; it's the style's engine, recruiting the hips on purpose.
Same human, four correct answers. Which is why judging a squat's torso angle without knowing the load style is grading an exam without knowing which subject it was.

The lean that actually is a problem
Two versions of forward lean deserve the worry people spend on all of it:
- Lean that arrives mid-rep. An angle set at the top and held through the bottom is a style. An angle that grows on the way down or — worse — on the drive up is a fold: the trunk losing its fight with the load. The app measures this separately, comparing your torso angle at the bottom against the early drive; chest and hips rising together reads near zero, a chest dipping first reads positive. The angle you chose is fine. The angle that chose you isn't.
- Lean as a depth payment. If the torso folds toward horizontal specifically as you chase the bottom, you're buying depth with posture — usually an ankle-range bill. Fix the range, not the chest.
The drill — Goblet Pause Squats
To feel what tall means for your body: 3 sets of 6, weight held at the chest, two full seconds paused at the bottom, staying proud through the pause. The counterweight lets almost anyone sit deep and upright immediately — it's the cheapest ticket to the feeling every style then preserves in its own proportion.
Film your normal squat side-on, tell the app your load style, and read your lean in context. If it matches your style's territory and holds from bottom to drive — that's not a fault to fix. That's your squat, working.
