What the coach measures

How your hip MARKER compares to your knee marker at the bottom. The hip marker sits above your actual hip crease, so around -0.1 here is already near parallel - bigger numbers are deeper. Deeper never costs you: every published depth standard is a minimum to clear, not a target to hit, and past parallel this number also grows with a long femur, which is not technique. Measured from the side camera.
Your deepest knee bend - smaller is deeper, 180 is standing. Parallel usually lives near 90-100 degrees. Ten competitive powerlifters measured 60 +/- 10 degrees at the bottom of a heavy squat in a 3-D lab, so a small number here is a finished squat, not an excess - and going deeper never costs you.
How far your torso leans from vertical at the deepest point. Some lean is normal and depends on how you're loaded - trained lifters measured about 47 degrees at the bottom of a high-bar squat and about 57 low-bar, so the window reaches 60 rather than calling a textbook low-bar bottom a fault. Folding toward horizontal is what we watch for.
How much your torso angle changes as you start driving up. Near zero or negative means chest and hips rise together; a positive number means the chest dipped first. A technically sound near-maximal squat by a trained lifter still gains 2 to 8 degrees here depending on exactly when in the drive we catch you, so zero is not the target - a big gain is the fault.
How far your shoulder line wanders off its starting point over your feet during the rep. Loaded or not, a squat wants this line vertical. We track your shoulder, not a bar: a bar sitting behind the shoulder swings away from it as your torso rotates, so a perfect bar path still shows up here as roughly a seventh of a torso-length of shoulder travel, and the window allows for that.
How long you take on the way down. Anything you're actually controlling is fine - this only flags a rep that free-falls into the bottom. Trained athletes told to drop as fast as they possibly can under load still take about 0.85 s, which is where the window's floor comes from.
How your knee spacing compares to your ankle spacing at its narrowest while you're still deep in the rep - the deepest half of each rep's travel, where a cave actually happens. Standing tall at the top no longer counts against you. Below about 0.9 the knees are drifting in under load; wide knees never hurt this read (it's a floor, not a ceiling).
How long you take on the way down. Anything you're actually controlling is fine - this only flags a rep that free-falls into the bottom. Trained athletes told to drop as fast as they possibly can under load still take about 0.85 s, which is where the window's floor comes from.
How evenly your reps repeat. A metronome set means every rep practices the same squat. Read it as repeatability, not rank: nobody has published what rep-to-rep evenness looks like at any level of lifter.

Drills the coach prescribes
Squat to a box or bench set at parallel height. Touch, pause one beat, drive up. The box teaches your body exactly where depth lives.
Hold a weight at your chest, squat to depth, pause 2 full seconds at the bottom staying tall, then stand. The counterweight lets you sit deeper with a proud chest.
Three seconds down, one second pause, one second up. Slow eccentrics build control and expose exactly where your form drifts.
Light band just above the knees; push out against it the whole rep. The band gives your knees a target - out, over the toes, never caving in.
How to film it
- ✓ Phone at hip height, 8-12 feet away and steady, portrait - you should stand about a third of the frame tall, head to feet. Below about a sixth the clip is usually rejected, and a hand-held phone drops the hip-and-shoulder rise read
- ✓ Whole body in frame, feet to head, for the entire rep
- ✓ Square the phone to whichever side you picked - a 3/4 angle gets read as the other view, and you lose the metrics that view can't see
- ✓ One to three reps per clip works best
- ✓ Side-on shows depth and back angle best; front-on shows knee tracking - turn the phone landscape for front-on so the whole bar stays in frame
- ✓ Wear clothing with some contrast to the background - joints track better
