Film your squat from the front and you might meet a stranger: a lifter who descends down the middle and then, somewhere in the drive up, slides sideways — hips washing toward one leg, one knee diving in while the other holds, the whole rep finishing slightly off-center like a picture hung in a hurry. The hip shift is among the most common things a front camera reveals, and among the least felt from inside. Almost nobody knows they shift until footage tells them.
What's usually behind it
A shift is the body routing load toward the side it trusts more, and the reasons are mundane more often than sinister:
- An old favorite. Months of subtly protecting a once-tweaked ankle or knee can outlive the original reason entirely. The guarding becomes the habit; the habit becomes the squat.
- Uneven ankle range. One ankle with less forward travel than the other blocks that knee's path, and the body detours around the blockage. The knee-to-wall test, done both sides, exposes this in thirty seconds — a difference between sides is a finding.
- A stance that isn't symmetric. One toe flared more, one foot a half-inch forward — tiny setup asymmetries the shift then obeys faithfully.
- Plain old strength difference. One leg that's simply done more work, doing more work.
For the many shifters with a boring cause, the retraining below is the whole fix. One honest caveat first: a shift that comes with pain, or that appeared suddenly rather than being discovered on film, is a see-a-qualified-human situation — a camera reads patterns, not causes, and neither does a coach who hasn't examined you.
What the video honestly shows
The shift's home is the front view. CoachVision's front-camera read measures knee tracking — your knee spacing versus ankle spacing at its narrowest on the way up — and a shift very often trips it, because the sliding side's knee dives inward as the hips wash over. That read is trustworthy in one direction: geometry makes it under-call caves rather than invent them, so a flagged number means something real happened in your knee lane.
What tells you it's a shift rather than a symmetric cave is the keyframes: freeze the bottom and the drive, and look at which knee leads inward and where your center sits between your feet. The app doesn't compute a dedicated "shift score" — asymmetry lives in the frames, and pretending otherwise would be invention. Number for the cave, your eyes on the frames for the sidedness: that combination is the honest diagnosis. Fatigue matters too — compare the last rep's bottom frame against the first. Plenty of shifts only clock in after rep three.
Retraining the middle
- Rebuild symmetry at the setup. Chalk marks for both feet, identical flare, every rep. Boring, decisive.
- Slow the reps down. Shifts live at speed. A three-second descent gives you time to feel the drift and steer back — pausing at the bottom, dead center, resets the rep's politics before the drive.
- The drill — Band-Around-Knees Squats. 2 sets of 10 at warm-up weight, light band above the knees, both knees pushing out the whole rep. The band gives each knee its own assignment — the trusted side can't quietly do the shifted side's job — and the lagging side gets hundreds of reminders per week.
Then re-film from the front, same angle, weekly. Watch the knee lane hold and the bottom frames center up. The middle is a skill. Train it like one.
