It's one of the most-asked questions in the sport and one of the least-answered: how fast are you actually supposed to pump this thing?

Here's the answer, straight: the working flat-ground pump lives around one full cycle per second. One complete rail-to-rail round trip — compress into the left arc, extend through the middle, compress into the right — in roughly the time it takes to say "one-one-thousand."

That number is worth knowing because the misses on either side of it are two completely different rides.

Slower than that: you're carving

Drop well below the working cadence — one lazy cycle every two seconds or more — and you're not pumping anymore, you're carving. Nothing dishonorable about carving; long drawn-out arcs are half the joy of a surfskate. But each slow arc spends more speed than it generates, so a carving cadence on flat ground is a countdown: the run coasts on whatever speed it started with until a foot has to come down.

A cadence that keeps sagging can also be the pump quietly dying mid-run — cycles stretching out as the legs tire or attention drifts, until pumping fades into coasting without a clear moment where it stopped.

Faster than that: you're fluttering

Push well above the working cadence and you hit the opposite miss: ankle flutter. Cycles arriving too fast for your hips to travel anywhere, so the whole pump happens below the knees — the board buzzes side to side, effort is maximal, and speed barely responds. Busy, not fast. If you're pumping twice a second and going nowhere, the cadence itself is the fault: there's no room in the cycle for your mass to move, and mass is what pumps.

The tempo and the metronome

Two refinements before you go count your cycles.

First, one-per-second is a home base, not a law. It flexes with the situation — a touch quicker to build from slow, a touch longer once you're moving and each arc carries further. The band is forgiving. What it doesn't forgive is living far outside it.

Second, evenness matters as much as rate. A steady 0.8 cycles per second outruns an erratic 1.0, because the board compounds energy only when cycles arrive on schedule. Rate is the tempo; consistency is the metronome. You want both.

You don't have to count while riding — that way lies staring at your feet. Film a 10–20 second run, phone fixed on a tripod, and CoachVision measures your cadence and how evenly it repeats, cycle by cycle. Most riders misjudge their own tempo in exactly the direction you'd expect: flutterers think they're steady, carvers think they're pumping.

The drill — Circles to Figure-Eights

The best way to find the working cadence is to let geometry set it for you.

Pump continuous circles one direction: the circle's arc arrives at a fixed interval, so the shape paces your cycles the way a dance partner paces your steps. Five minutes, then five the other way. Then link them into figure-eights, keeping the tempo through the crossover. Then straighten the eight into a line — and notice that the rhythm the circles gave you is almost exactly one cycle per second. It was never an arbitrary number; it's the tempo the board itself prefers.

Five minutes per shape, each session, until the tempo rides along without being counted. Then check it on video once a week. Once a second, evenly, forever — that's the whole secret, and now it's yours.
