The board's gliding along beautifully, right where you put it. You jump — and it squirts out from under your foot like a bar of soap, skittering up the beach while you perform some improvised choreography into the shallows. The board didn't malfunction. Physics just graded your mount.

Here's what happens in that half-second. A skimboard on a film of water is nearly frictionless — that's its whole job. When you leap at it and stomp down, your foot doesn't just press down; a jumping foot almost always lands with some forward or sideways shove in it. On ground, friction absorbs that shove. On a lubricated board, there's nothing to absorb it — the board takes the shove and leaves, in whatever direction your foot pushed it.

The deeper cause is a mismatch of momentum. When you leap, you briefly stop running and become a projectile — and projectiles land heavy, at an angle, with impact. The board is still traveling at run speed; you're arriving on a different vector. The collision between those two motions is what fires the board away.

Now watch someone with a clean mount and notice what's missing: the jump. There isn't one. They run, the board is placed into their next footstep, and they simply keep walking — back foot rolls onto the tail, front foot flows to the middle, and their body never stops traveling at board speed. No impact, no shove, nothing for the board to object to. The whole trick is that you and the board are moving together, so stepping on transfers almost no sideways force at all.

The cue that fixes most of it: step onto the board, don't land on it. Think of stepping from a dock onto a moving boat — you match its speed and flow aboard; you don't leap and hope. Soft ankle, weight arriving gradually over the foot, the next stride already in motion.

There's a timing tell wrapped inside this fault, too. Riders who leap usually pause first — plant, gather, jump — and that gather is exactly where the mount goes heavy. A mount that flows takes a fraction of a second from back foot to front foot; a leap-style mount takes visibly longer and lands harder. That back-foot-to-front-foot duration is one of the numbers CoachVision times from a regular side-on phone clip, and shrinking it goes hand in hand with the board staying put.

Build the soft landing with the Running-Land Drill. Board static on firm wet sand. Jog up and land both feet in position — back foot on the tail, front foot over the middle — with landings quiet enough that the board barely shifts on the sand. Look at your feet after each rep and check the placement. Do 15 reps each side. On sand the board will forgive a stomp; make it your standard anyway, because water won't. When fifteen reps in a row are soft and silent, take the same feeling to thin water.

The board wants to stay under you — it has no plans of its own. Arrive gently, moving with it, and it will.
