Two riders, same beach, same minute. One drops and rockets out to the wave like the water is helping — because it is. The other drops with an identical run and grinds to a halt in three board-lengths, as if the ocean grabbed the board. It did.
The difference wasn't talent. It was ten feet of sand and a half-second of timing. One rider dropped into a go-window; the other dropped into dead water.
Dead water — the momentum trap
Between surges, the water on the beach face sometimes just... sits. Not rushing in, not draining out. Still, and deeper than the film — a stalled pocket where the last surge pooled.
Dead water is the single hungriest thing you can drop onto. It's deep enough that your board settles in instead of planing on top, and drag climbs brutally as a board sinks even a little. It's still, so it gives you nothing — no push, no pull, just resistance. A drop that would glide forty feet on live film dies in a handful there, and the rider usually walks back convinced they ran slow. The run was fine. The parking spot wasn't.
You can learn to see it: dead water looks dull and glassy-thick, without the sheen and shimmer of a thin moving film. Once you know its face, you'll be amazed how often you used to drop straight into it.
The two go-windows
Now the places that help. The water at the shoreline is usually moving, and both directions of movement offer you a deal.
Go-window one — the surge rushing IN. Drop onto that incoming film and the surface under your board is already traveling toward the shore-break's edge. It's a moving walkway: your sprint speed plus the water's own motion, a genuine boost you didn't have to run for.
Go-window two — the surge drawing OUT. As the water drains back down the slope, drop on the wet sand behind it and the outflow pulls you seaward, ferrying you toward the incoming wave. Less flashy than window one, but the delivery is real.
