Piling is the fault that most tempts casters to buy things: a new line, a stiffer rod, a shorter leader. Save the money for now. A pile-up is nearly always an energy problem, and the energy is leaking somewhere very specific.
A pile is a cast that ran out of forward
For the line to land straight, the cast's energy has to travel forward — the loop unrolls, the leader turns over, everything arrives in a line pointed at the target. For that to happen, the rod tip needs to travel a firm, fairly straight path and then stop crisply, sending everything it has in one direction.
Now picture the wide, floppy version: the rod sweeps through a big arc, wrist flipping open at the back, drifting long at the front. A wide arc points the tip down at the start, up at the end, and only briefly forward in the middle — so the cast's energy gets sprayed into the ground and the sky, with whatever's left over sent toward the target. That leftover is what you watched die at thirty feet. The loop opens wide, drag eats it, and the line lands as a heap because it never had the energy to land as a line.
A soft stop finishes the job. The cast happens at the stop — a rod that oozes to a halt instead of braking hard releases its energy in a dribble, and dribbles don't turn leaders over.
Check the arc before anything else

Cast 15 times with the butt tucked, then 5 without, on the lawn with a scrap of yarn for a fly.
The first tucked casts feel stiff, almost rude — like the rod's been put in a splint. Stay with it.
