Drills the coach prescribes
Stand side-on to an imaginary clock face: the rod stops at 10 out front and 2 behind, and never drifts past either number. A short, firm arc with a hard stop at both ends is where a tight cast is born.
Tuck the rod butt inside your sleeve cuff or under your watch band so the wrist physically can't break open. The forearm learns to carry the stroke, and the stops sharpen up almost on their own.
Picture a shelf beside you at chest height: your elbow slides back and up along it on the backcast, then forward and down along it on the delivery. No pinning at the ribs, no lifting off the shelf.
Practice your stroke a hand's width from a wall or fence line so your casting hand has exactly one lane to travel, straight back and straight through. If the wall was ever in danger, the cast was weaving.
How to film it
- ✓ Lawn practice is perfect — no water needed; a scrap of yarn stands in for the fly
- ✓ Phone on a tripod at waist height, steady — no hand-held
- ✓ Whole body in frame, and the rod tip too if you can manage it
- ✓ 3-6 false-cast cycles per clip beats one hero cast
- ✓ Casting-arm side toward the camera for the side view
- ✓ 60fps if your phone has it — the stops happen fast
