Somewhere past your shins, the bar swings forward — an inch, maybe a hand's width — and suddenly a weight that broke off the floor just fine turns into a fight. The lockout stalls. Your low back complains later. And because the drift is small and fast, you probably never see it happen.

But your body pays for it in full, because of a piece of physics that runs the whole lift: leverage. The further the bar travels from your body, the longer the lever arm your low back has to fight against. Every inch of forward drift multiplies the effective load on your spine — same plates, heavier lift. The strongest possible deadlift rides a near-vertical line over mid-foot, brushing your legs the entire way up. Not because it looks tidy. Because it's the shortest lever.

The muscles nobody told you about

So what lets the bar wander? Usually the lats — the big muscles that run from your armpits down your back. Their job in a deadlift is unglamorous and essential: they pull the bar back into you, pinning it against your legs while the hips and legs do the lifting. When the lats are switched off, nothing is holding the bar close, and forward is where gravity and geometry send it.

Here's why this fault deserves your attention first if you have several going at once: bar drift is often the first domino. The bar drifts forward, the back rounds to chase it, the hips shoot up to compensate — and now you've got three faults that are really one. Coach the lats and the chain often cleans itself up. The cue — protect your armpits

Before every pull, squeeze the bar back into your body like you're crushing oranges in your armpits. That's the whole cue. Oranges, armpits, crush. It sounds ridiculous and it works, because it recruits exactly the muscles that keep the bar glued to your legs — and it happens before the pull, when you still have attention to spend.

The drill — Protect-Your-Armpits Pulls

Cues evaporate under load unless they've been grooved without it. So: take an empty bar at the start of your session. Set up, squeeze the oranges, and pull — feeling the bar drag lightly up your shins and thighs the whole way. That contact is the proof the lats are on. Do 2 sets of 5, every session, until the squeeze happens without you thinking about it. Then it starts showing up at working weight, which is the only place it matters.

One honest caveat: if you pull with a trap bar, the handles sit at your sides by design — the bar can't brush your legs, and judging closeness doesn't apply. Judge verticality instead.

Since the drift is nearly impossible to feel and easy to see, video settles it. Film a rep side-on with the plates in frame and watch your hands: wrists rising in a straight vertical line means lats on; wrists swinging forward of your shins mid-pull means they let go.
