Trace the bar's journey in a great deadlift and you get something almost disappointing: a straight vertical line, floor to lockout, directly over the middle of the foot. No loops, no swings, no drama. Trace a struggling deadlift and you get handwriting — the bar swinging out around the knees, drifting forward mid-thigh, wandering back in for the finish.
That difference isn't style. It's the difference between lifting the weight and lifting the weight plus fighting your own leverage.
The physics, in one paragraph
Your body pulls from over your mid-foot — that's where your balance lives and where your structure stacks. Every inch the bar strays forward of that line, it gains leverage against you: the same plates get effectively heavier, and the muscle that pays the difference is mostly your low back, holding a longer lever arm with every drifted inch. A bar that rises in a near-vertical line over mid-foot, brushing your legs the whole way, is the shortest possible lever — which is why the strongest pull and the safest pull happen to be the same pull. Straight isn't aesthetic. Straight is cheap.
The two ways the line breaks
The bar drifts away from you. The lats — the big muscles running from your armpits down your back — are what pin the bar against your legs. When they're off, nothing holds the bar close, and forward is where geometry sends it. Watch your hands mid-pull on video: wrists swinging a hand's width forward of your shins means the lats let go.
You drift away from the bar. Hips shooting up early tip the shoulders forward over the bar, and the whole system shifts — the bar ends up forward of mid-foot not because it moved, but because you did. The cure lives in the first pull: hips and chest rise together, pushing the floor away, until the bar passes the knees.
The two feed each other — bar drifts, back rounds to chase it, hips shoot up to compensate. When several faults appear at once, the drifting bar is usually the first domino, which is why the lats deserve the first coaching.
(One honest exception: on a trap bar, the handles ride beside your thighs by design — closeness to the legs doesn't apply. Judge verticality instead.)
The drill — Protect-Your-Armpits Pulls
The lat squeeze has to happen before the pull, while you still have attention to spend — so it gets grooved where attention is free. At the start of every session, take an empty bar: set up, squeeze the bar back into your body like you're crushing oranges in your armpits, and pull — feeling the bar drag lightly up your shins and thighs the entire rep. That drag is the proof the line is holding. Do 2 sets of 5. When the squeeze fires without being asked, it starts surviving at working weight, which is the only place it matters.
