Every athlete wants more height, and almost every athlete goes shopping for it in the same aisle: strength. Squats, plyos, calf raises, jump programs. Strength genuinely matters — we'll get there — but for most cheer athletes it's the SECOND lever, and pulling it first is why so much hard conditioning produces so little extra air.
The first lever is timing, and it's free.
Lever one: the set you're probably rushing
A jump is a spring. The set — the deliberate sink and arm swing before takeoff — is how the spring gets loaded, and the depth and timing of that load decide how much comes back. A real set sinks to a genuine knee bend, roughly a quarter-squat, with the arms swinging back and driving up exactly as the legs push. Rush it — a shallow dip, arms freelancing, everything hurried — and you leave the ground off half a spring, working twice as hard for half the air.
Here's the test that sorts athletes in ten seconds: film a jump side-on and watch the set. If your knees barely bend before takeoff, no strength program on earth is your next step — your next step is a count. "1, 2" for the arm swing, "down" for the sink, "up" for the drive, spoken out loud until the rhythm is automatic. Athletes who fix a rushed set often gain more height in two weeks of counting than in two months of conditioning, because they were never using the strength they already had.
The same side-on clip settles the question with numbers: CoachVision measures how deep your set was and how far your hips actually traveled, so "did I really sink?" stops being a matter of opinion.
Lever two: power, with posture attached
Once the set is honest, strength turns real. More force through the same well-timed spring equals more air — now the conditioning pays. But cheer height has a rule that general jump training misses: the height only counts if your posture survives it. A big jump with a folded chest reads LOWER than a modest jump with a proud one, because leg height is judged against your torso. So cheer-specific power work trains the legs and the posture in the same rep — drive hard, chest tall, land soft. (Also worth saying plainly: more height means more landing. Soft, feet-together landings on a sprung floor or mats are part of the height project, not an accessory to it.)
The drill — Chest-Up Squat Jumps
This is jump power practiced with the exact posture your toe touch needs. Squat jump with one rule that outranks everything: your chest stays proud the whole way — down into the squat, up through the drive, and on the landing. Land soft, feet together, standing tall before the next rep.
The chest rule is what makes it cheer training instead of generic training. Plenty of athletes can jump high with a folded torso; that habit imports the chest drop straight into your toe touch. Here, if the chest dips, the rep didn't count.
Do 3 sets of 6, with full effort on each rep and real rest between sets — power work rewards quality over volume.
Run the levers in order: count your set until it's patient and automatic, then add chest-up power on top. That's the sequence that turns effort into altitude — and keeps the altitude looking like YOUR jump, proud chest and all, the whole way up.
