What the coach measures
Chest-down to feet-planted in one motion. Under a second is the standard - hesitation is what buries noses.
One continuous rise, no pause in the middle. A stall mid-pop-up usually means the knees touched down - the classic habit to break.
Shoulder-width or a touch wider. Too narrow tips over; too wide can't move.
Bent knees, not a full squat - about 45 degrees of flex. Your legs are the suspension; locked knees transmit every bump.
Hips slightly toward the front foot (about 60/40). Weight back stalls the board; weight forward buries it.
A slight forward hinge from the hips, chest over the board - not bolt upright, not folded over.

Drills the coach prescribes
Tape a board outline on the floor. Chest down, palms under shoulders, pop to your stance in ONE motion - no knees touching.
Burpees that finish in your surf stance instead of standing tall. Builds the explosive push and the landing pattern together.
The pop-up is an explosive push-up. Clapping push-ups (or fast knee push-ups) build the pop.
In slow motion: cobra press, sweep the front foot through WITHOUT the knee touching, land in stance. Slow reps teach the path; speed comes later.
How to film it
- ✓ Film LANDSCAPE from the beach, zoomed as far as your phone allows
- ✓ Keep the surfer AND the wave face in frame
- ✓ Start before the paddle, stop after the ride (or the wipeout - we're kind about those)
- ✓ One wave per clip works best
- ✓ 60fps if your phone has it
